The relationship between low levels of mindfulness skills and pathological worry: The mediating role of psychological inflexibility

Mindfulness-based interventions have recently been proposed for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, the specific nature of the relationship between mindfulness skills and pathological worry is still not very well known. This study analyzes the mediating role of psychological inflexibility, a central construct in the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) model of psychopathology, in the effect of mindfulness skills on pathological worry. A total of 132 nonclinical participants completed questionnaires assessing the constructs of interest: the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire – II (AAQ-II), and the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). Because the Spanish translation of the KIMS used lacked of a formal validation, its psychometric properties and factor structure were previously evaluated. This process led to a reduced version of the KIMS that showed good internal consistency and factor structure. Mediation analyses revealed that psychological inflexibility fully mediated the effects of mindfulness skills as a set on pathological worry. Regarding specific mindfulness skills, psychological inflexibility was shown to be a mediator and suppressor, respectively, of the relationship between acceptance without judgment and act with awareness on worry. Results are discussed emphasizing the need of using mindfulness exercises to promote psychological flexibility. Recientemente, las intervenciones basadas en mindfulness se han propuesto para el tratamiento del trastorno de ansiedad generalizada. Sin embargo, no se conoce aún adecuadamente la naturaleza específica de la relación entre las habilidades de mindfulness y la preocupación patológica. Este estudio analiza el rol de la inflexibilidad psicológica, un constructo central en el modelo psicopatológico de la terapia de aceptación y compromiso (ACT), en el efecto que las habilidades de mindfulness tienen en la preocupación patológica. Un total de 132 participantes completaron instrumentos que miden los constructos de interés: el Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), el Acceptance and Action Questionnaire – II (AAQ II), y el Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). Puesto que la traducción al español del KIMS carecía de validación formal, se analizaron sus propiedades psicométricas y estructura factorial. Este proceso generó una versión reducida del KIMS con buena consistencia interna y e s tructura factorial. Los análisis de mediación revelaron que la inflexibilidad psicológica medió completamente los efectos de las habilidades de mindfulness en la preocupación patológica. En cuanto a las habilidades de mindfulness específicas, la inflexibilidad psicológica fue un mediador y supresor de las relaciones que tienen, respectivamente, la aceptación sin juicio y la acción consciente con la preocupación. Se discuten los resultados enfatizando la necesidad de poner los ejercicios de mindfulness al servicio de promover flexibilidad psicológica

The Spanish version of the Work-related Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (WAAQ)

Background: Psychological flexibility, a key construct of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), has recently been found to be an important determinant of mental health and behavioral effectiveness in the workplace. This finding has led to designing a measure of psychological flexibility especially tailored to the workplace (the Work-related Acceptance and Action Questionnaire; WAAQ) in the hope that it may reveal even stronger associations with variables related to a work context. Method: First, we back-translated the WAAQ into Spanish and then administered it to 209 workers, in addition to other relevant work-related measures. Results: Data were very similar to those obtained with the original WAAQ version. The WAAQ showed a very good internal consistency (a = .92) and a clear one-factor structure. It also showed higher correlations with work-specific measures than a general measure of psychological inflexibility (the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II; AAQ-II). As hypothesized by the ACT theory, the correlation between the WAAQ and the AAQ-II was moderate but not so high as to suggest that they are assessing the same construct. Conclusions: This Spanish translation of the WAAQ emerges as a reliable and valid measure of psychological flexibility in relation to the workplace. Antecedentes: la flexibilidad psicológica, un constructo central en la Terapia de Aceptación y Compromiso (ACT), ha mostrado ser un determinante importante de la salud mental y la efectividad conductual en el trabajo. Estos hallazgos han llevado a diseñar una medida de flexibilidad psicológica ajustada al contexto laboral (Cuestionario de Aceptación y Acción en el Trabajo; WAAQ) que pudiera mostrar asociaciones incluso mayores con variables relacionadas con el contexto laboral. Método: se realizó una traducción inversa del WAAQ en español y se aplicó a 209 trabajadores conjuntamente con otras medidas. Resultados: los datos obtenidos fueron muy similares a los de la versión original. El WAAQ mostró muy buena consistencia interna (a= .92) y una estructura unifactorial. Además, el WAAQ mostró correlaciones más altas con medidas específicas del contexto laboral que una medida general de inflexibilidad psicológica (el Cuestionario de Aceptación y Acción - II; AAQ-II). Tal y como hipotetiza el modelo de ACT, la correlación entre el WAAQ y el AAQ-II fue moderada y no tan grande como para sugerir que ambos cuestionarios miden el mismo constructo. Conclusiones: la presente versión española del WAAQ se muestra como una medida fiable y válida de la flexibilidad psicológica en el contexto laboral

A note on Appell sequences, Mellin transforms and Fourier series

A large class of Appell polynomial sequences {p n (x)} n=0 8 are special values at the negative integers of an entire function F(s, x), given by the Mellin transform of the generating function for the sequence. For the Bernoulli and Apostol-Bernoulli polynomials, these are basically the Hurwitz zeta function and the Lerch transcendent. Each of these have well-known Fourier series which are proved in the literature using various techniques. Here we find the latter Fourier series by directly calculating the coefficients in a straightforward manner. We then show that, within the context of Appell sequences, these are the only cases for which the polynomials have uniformly convergent Fourier series. In the more general context of Sheffer sequences, we find that there are other polynomials with uniformly convergent Fourier series. Finally, applying the same ideas to the Fourier transform, considered as the continuous analog of the Fourier series, the Hermite polynomials play a role analogous to that of the Bernoulli polynomials

Organización del discurso en textos históricos de los siglos XIII y XIV: capítulos, apartados y sus formas de introducción

En este trabajo se estudian algunas características de la organización del discurso en tres textos narrativos de los siglos XIII y XIV, dos de ellos de carácter histórico , la Primera Crónica General y la Gran Crónica de Alfonso XI, y otro de carácter novelesco, aunque redactado con apariencia de texto histórico: el Libro de Joseph Abarimatia. Estos textos se estructuran en capítulos o apartados que presentan un contenido homogéneo, nítidamente separado de los capítulos o apartados que les preceden o siguen, pero con los que tienen que engarzarse de un modo coherente. El objetivo central de este estudio lo constituyen los procedimientos de unión entre los capítulos, que sirven para reforzar la coherencia de los textos, y entre los que destacan la presencia de indicaciones temporales en el comienzo de un capítulo, que hacen referencia a algo tratado en el capítulo anterior, las referencias explícitas al desarrollo de la historia, y el señalamiento del final de un tema que se está tratando, o del que se va a desarrollar, procedimiento frecuente en el límite entre capítulos. Este estudio pretende contribuir al mejor conocimiento de la tipología textual y su desarrollo histórico, en relación con los procedimientos de coherencia utilizados. In the present article we want to study some characteristics of discourse organization in three narrative texts from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, two of the historical texts, the Primera Crónica General and the Gran Crónica de Alfonso XI, and a novelistic one: the Libro de Joseph Abarimatia. These texts are divided in chapters or sections which present a homogeneus content, clearly separated from the preceding or following chapter or sections; still they must have a coherente conncetion with them. The main goal of this pape ris to study linking procederes between chapters, which can reinforce the text coherente. Between then we can highlight temporal indications at the beginning oc chapters, which referto something mentioned in the previous chapter, the explicit reference to the narration development, and the pointing out of the end of a theme, or the indication of a new one which is going to be developed, a frequent procedure in chapter limits. This article attempts to contribute to a better knowledge of text typology and its historical development, in relationship to the coherence procedures used

A Greenhouse Tomato Crop Grey Mould Disease Early Warning System

Tomato is a very important crop in the Mediterranean region in general and in Portugal in particular being the production for fresh consumption made essentially in greenhouses. Botrytis cinerea Pers.: Fr. is the causal agent of grey mould disease and is one of the most important diseases affecting greenhouse tomato crops, high relative humidity and the presence of free water on the plant surfaces have been recognized as favourable to the development of this disease. The availability of a early warning system providing to the tomato grower alerts with information of the potential favoured conditions for the disease appearance in its early stages or even before can have a very positive impact in reducing the economic and environmental impacts due to a more rational and efficient disease control management. Today we have the necessary technology to build and launch an Internet based early warning system for grey mould disease in greenhouse tomato crop supported by a wireless sensor network. In this paper a prototype for such a system is presented. From the research conducted until the moment the proposed solution is viable and the next step will be to validate it in the field in different locations and with distinct greenhouses conditions
